Artist Statement
In the part of the Phoenix Mountain Preserve I frequently mountain bike, a couple of saguaros usually fall each year. Recently, many more than usual have fallen due to warmer summers with higher low temperatures and infrequent rain. Fallen is my series of paintings of some of these saguaros.
A freshly fallen saguaro stands out: a giant, green cactus that lays horizontal on the desert floor. Within months it turns brown, dries out, and starts to blend into the landscape, gradually becoming invisible and forgotten.
The saguaro cactus, carnegiea gigantea, is a keystone plant of, and only found in, the Sonoran desert. It isn’t rare though it may become rarer as our climate gets warmer and dryer.
These paintings are all acrylic paint on black and white inkjet prints. Rather than simply colorizing black and white photos, I chose to paint the saguaros to make them more visible in the landscape, not camouflaged by their decomposition.
