In her debut solo exhibition, Cackle, Wail, Shake!, Marisa Skelpsa-Muñoz shares works born from her exploration of divesting from internalized systems of oppression and remembering the power available to us through movement and interconnectivity. These paintings serve to soften the numbing and isolating effects of social media, AI, deepening fascism, late stage capitalism, and the lie of perfection.
Each piece is deeply relational, based on Marisa’s growing practice of sharing space with loved ones (including herself), in which the intimacy of being seen can happen in ways our nervous systems both fear and ache to experience. It is in this container that Marisa captures video of people existing in the ways they feel free: dancing, laughing, cuddling, crying. From this process of documentation, she pulls still images of bodies in motion to use as references for these paintings.
Marisa plays between realism and abstraction while growing the painting out from the body through contemplation on the fleshiness of pleasure, the innate erotic intelligence of life, and the breaking apart of ancestral shame. She stays dedicated to a wild color palette that celebrates the chaotic and the sensual while existing as big, resounding, joyful laughter in the face of western chromophobia.
This work is a love letter to you, as you are, and an invitation to move and be moved. Being in the body keeps it yours.
