Daniel Prendergast: Resolutions

In Resolutions, Prendergast explores the evolving conversation between gesture, intuition, and visual analysis. His paintings emerge through an iterative cycle of addition, removal, and reflection — a process he describes as “a steady rhythm in which each mark invites the next.” The resulting works feel more discovered than constructed, shaped by a balance of intention, accident, and continual reassessment.

Prendergast notes that a painting resolves when its gestures “feel inevitable,” when tension and clarity coexist, and when color, texture, and rhythm “align into a coherent pulse.” Some works settle into quiet order, others into purposeful friction, but all share a sense of completion earned through instinct and appraisal.

Artist Statement

The work in Resolutions grow out of a steady rhythm of making and evaluating — a back-and-forth in which each mark invites the next. My paintings begin with no fixed destination in mind; they emerge through addition, subtraction, and continual reassessment, bringing intention and accident into balance.

A work resolves when its gestures feel inevitable, when tension and clarity coexist, and when color, texture, and rhythm align into a coherent pulse and suggest an intriguing place. Some pieces settle into quiet order, others into purposeful friction, but all must reach the point where adding more would diminish rather than deepen them.

These paintings are traces of that pursuit: moments where instinct meets appraisal, and the image finally declares itself complete.
