October 2019 Daniel Prendergast solo show

Looking Back: New Works, Daniel Prendergast solo exhibit, October 2019

Daniel Prendergast spent much of the past year in the garden, where he observes nature and chronicles its cycles. The artwork isn’t mere depiction of flowers, thorn and ornament. In his drawings, paintings and photographs the garden is the stage for mysterious animist dramas. Blossoms, statues and even shadows are among the players, each imbued with spirit. He says, “The garden seems to me both a still, peaceful place and the site of subtly swirling conflict. There is expectation. Birth and death are in their perpetual dance and something like plant consciousness is poised to assert itself while stone and plaster figures stand witness.”

Prendergast feels he’s captured a bit of the animating spirit of things when he looks at an image and it is looking back.
