Joan C. Thompson
I am fascinated by direct drawing and painting, on canvas or copper, enjoy my immediate response to the subject. Noticing how light plays on the subject, dominant lines in form and patterns of movement, and the interaction of color is challenging and rewarding. Recurrent themes of existentialism and the human condition, ”Who are we, why are we here, where are we going?“ surface as I am working. I do not preconceive to illustrate or exemplify these themes; they suggest themselves as the artwork develops and I try to respond. Whether figurative or abstract, the figure, the human dimension, the infinite variety of its movement, fuels both my figurative and abstract work.
